Congratulations to Tony Benecke and Wolf Lennert Didszuhn who swept away the field at this week’s Captain’s Day hosted at Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club. As a two ball-better ball event, they scored 47 points, four points ahead of their nearest rivals of Paul Stump and Kevin Creane. In third place were Dylan Mustard and Leonard Thyagarajan on 42 points.
Nearest the pin on 3 (&12!) was Archie Gemmell. Our Captain, Iain Lachlan, also won a NTP on hole 8 (&17), inches away from an expensive hole-in-one. T’was a great shot!

Dear All,
\r\n\r\nWe are now coming to the end of the Golf Societys fiscal year (1st April 2010 to 31st March 2011) and we hope that you have enjoyed the various tournaments organised thus far. With this in mind, we would like to remind our members that we are now collecting subscriptions for the next year (1st April 2011 to 31st March 2012). The rate remains unchanged at Dhs 250.
\r\n\r\nWe would also like to bring to your attention of some significant policy changes that the Committee have agreed upon from 1st April 2011 these have been made in part due to the growing membership base (increasing of staff numbers), together with the still restricted access to weekend tee-times (i.e. we are unable to increase the number of slots available). As the duty of the Golf Society is first and foremost a club setup to serve staff, the first policy change is to ensure that the Society first serves Emirates staff members above other membership categories for a Society event. Therefore:
\r\n\r\n- \r\n
- Fully-subscribed Staff Society members (i.e. those who have paid their subs!) will get priority over any other member category such as Associates (which includes spouse of staff). Note, however, once an event is closed for registration all staff lose their right to priority over non-staff. I.e. staff are unable to bump non-staff from an event once registration has been closed, whichwill be a week before the event. \r\n
The second policy change provides a new category of membership:
\r\n\r\n- \r\n
- Honorary membership: these are ex-staff who have either retired from duty or who have served the organisation for a significant number of years. Invitation will be based on whether the ex-staff member is entitled to retiree travel benefits as per the employee regulations. This membership category has less priority than Staff membership, but higher than the Associate member category. \r\n
The final policy change is in response to the fact thatdue to the increasing number of non employee members participating in eventsmany of the winners this year were non-staff. Therefore, our final policy change is:
\r\n\r\n- \r\n
- All main prizes (1st, 2nd, 3rd) for events can only be won by members in the Staff category (i.e. current EK Group employees). Where there are a significant number of Associates or Guests in an event, a separate prize will be provided. Nearest-the-pins, longest drives and other miscellaneous prizes can be won by any competitor, whatever membership category. \r\n
We realise these policy changes impact a significant number of our membership, but hope you can understand the reason for our decision. Although we will still provide subsidised golf to all our membership, whatever category, our duty first and foremost is in serving our staff. Therefore, if you are impacted, we hope you understand and continue to support the Society going forward.
\r\n\r\nKind Regards,
\r\nCommittee
\r\nEmirates Golf Society
The second round of the OnAir Golf Day at the Fire course (Jumeirah Golf Estates) provided some very entertaining play, primarily due to the high winds; though this didn’t stop some excellent scores being posted…. However, before we get to who the winner was, here is a little recap from round one played in January: the first round was played at the majestical Earth course and the winner on that day was Dean Moss with 37 points, though there were a host of others snapping at his heels - Tony Benecke (36), Simon Mackenzie (36), Paul Nightingale (34), David Moore (33). All of these and a few others around the fringes were poised well for the second and final round.
Fast-forward a couple of weeks to a wind-swept Fire course, where it was easy to spill a few shots due to the near gale-force conditions. As mentioned earlier, based on this there were some amazing scores posted. Winners of the second OnAir day included a couple of new names: James Walters won the day with a fantastic 39 points with David Moore and Andrew McFarlane sharing second and third respectively, both carding 37 points. However, David’s second-placed finish still wasn’t enough to stop Dean Moss from being crowned OnAir Champion - he carded 35 points on the day, which gave him a combined total of 72 points, 2 points clear of David. Well done Dean (who has been on a bit of a winning streak this year…….).
We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the OnAir team of Ian Dawkins and Franck Michaud for providing the sponsorship of the event - it really was a fantastic two-match series and we hope it will be the first of many! Also, our thanks go to the team at Jumeirah Golf Estates who hosted us - both the courses were excellent tests of golf, in great shape and were staffed by a professional and courteous team.
The draw for Saturday’s second instalment of the OnAir Golf Day is shown below. Please note, the overall OnAir Champion is the person with the combined best stableford score from both OnAir events.
